During the time I was an air traffic controller, I witnessed an astounding number of FAA transgressions that helped foster an “us versus them” mentality and created a breeding ground for controller militancy. The FAA I worked for routinely ignored laws, rules and regulations; covered up its wrongdoings, and created working conditions that left many controllers destroyed individuals by the time they retired. These offenses led me to conclude that the FAA was unsalvageable as an employer. Beyond that, it was the flagrant disregard for its responsibility to the public and its own employees, along with my own personal administrative and legal battles with the FAA, that inspired this book.
"The work environment at the FAA is so poisonous I doubt that it can ever be repaired. Perhaps the only hope for turning things around is an informed, proactive public that will hold the FAA accountable for misdeeds and abuse of its air traffic control workforce."
